Foundation walls and what are they?

Foundation walls as its name suggests, are the foundations of a building. They are the foundations that maintain the structure of a home. Whether it be foundation walls of a home or commercial foundation walls, there can be leakage due to weather conditions, mismanagement or just improper construction of a building. Here, we will talk about 4 different types of foundation walls and just how basement leaking can easily diminish the look of a home or dwelling, but can be easily repaired!

What are the types of foundation walls?

Basement Concrete Walls

Concrete walls are foundation walls made of cinder blocks and can be constructed in a portion of the time it takes to make these concrete walls. These types of walls are more susceptible to water leaks. Leaking basement walls can limit the usefulness of your space as they lead to unappealing surfaces that are stained by mould, water, and white powdery efflorescence.
When walls continue to leak, they can obstruct the possibility of basement finishing, by adding moisture to the space that could be damaging to drywall, wood studs, carpeting and other organic materials.
The moisture encourages the growth of mould, mildew and rotting on your building materials. Where the walls are not covered, humidity adds to the dampness of the air, creating a musty and humid space!
This can be alarming but your leaking basement concrete wall still has a chance to survive!

Crawl space

A crawl space is an elevated foundation that uses block walls and footings around the outside to support the house. Cinder or concrete blocks extend from the footing and close the space off except at ventilation areas.
Crawl spaces were created as a buffer between the home and the wet, damp earth below. However, there are some advantages to this type of foundation wall – the buffer between the inhabitants and the earth below discourages, and even, terminates the possibility of termite infestation. Before the foundation wall is constructed, the floor is also treated for this purpose.
Due to the separation from earth, crawl spaces are great for flood-prone and earthquake prone-areas and saves the inhabitants and residents from wasted time, resources and funding for additional in-house protection.
Cracks in these safety foundations and the capacity to trap moisture and water under the home which lead to structural damage can lead up to $200 to $4000 in remediation and repair!
…But we have got your back!

Concrete Slab

As the name suggests, a slab is a single layer of concrete, several inches thick. The slab is poured thicker at the edges – to form an integral footing; reinforcing rods strengthen the thickened edge. The slab normally rests on a bed of crushed gravel to improve drainage. The concrete slab foundation wall is an excellent resource for maintaining a home’s safety. The concrete slab also finds itself very useful when strengthening a home’s foundation as well as its security. Because of this, the concrete slab is worthwhile to maintain and to repair as it does not share many of the other side effects as the other foundations.
Slab leakages refer to broken or ruptured pipelines underneath home or commercial buildings which have concrete floors. When these occur, it may be very difficult and frustrating to repair, especially within a commercial estate!

Wood Foundation

Wood foundations are built with wood that has been treated to resist rotting. These foundations help insulate heat in basements in cold weather, and can be more cost effective for isolated building sites where concrete is unavailable or too expensive to transport.

Some advantages include

  • Ease of installation
  • Advantage in remote locations
  • Plumbing and electrical repairs are easier
  • Insulation benefits

Some disadvantages include

  • Damage from rot and insects
  • Expensive
  • Toxicity of materials
The one main issue with wood foundation is that any moisture will lead to deterioration.
